Zumi was declared Sault Ste. Marie Public Library's volunteer of the year at a ceremony this week.
The two-year-old certified therapy dog, along with 65 representatives of a lesser mammalian species, were honoured at the library's annual volunteer reception on Monday.
"Zumi has been a source of comfort, joy and unwavering support to many who walk through our doors," said Matthew MacDonald, the library's chief executive officer.
"Whether she's calming nerves, offering a gentle paw to those in need, or simply spreading her quiet warmth, Zumi’s presence reminds us of the unique and powerful ways animals can change our lives.
"To Zumi, and to his handler, Joey Kirkwood, thank you for the countless ways you've enriched our library. You have brought joy to young and old alike, and your impact will be felt for years to come.”
Zumi's favourite things are breakfast/second breakfast/lunch/dinner as well as kids, trick-learning, mud puddles, trail running, people-greeting and sitting on feet.
MacDonald also celebrated the library's primate volunteers for "your unwavering commitment and countless hours of service that bring our library to life."
"You organize events, assist patrons, and ensure our shelves are filled with knowledge and inspiration. Your passion for reading and community engagement does not go unnoticed. Thank you for your tireless efforts and for being the heart of our library.
"To our donors and sponsors, your generous support allows us to expand our resources and create enriching programs for all ages. Your belief in the power of literacy and education empowers us to reach even more members of our community. We are incredibly grateful for your partnership," MacDonald said.
Zumi visits the the library's North Branch once a month on the last Wednesday for therapeutic visitation.
His next visit is planned for Nov. 27, 2024 starting at 5:15 p.m.
