VIDEO: Twelve new condo towers at Station Mall?

During an interview in our SooToday studio, we asked Mayor Matthew Shoemaker about the potential development at the mall — and the Veldman brothers' latest pitch

There have been plenty of headlines lately about potential developments around town — including the possibility of up to 12 new condo towers as part of Station Mall's ongoing $60-million renovation.

Even the Veldman brothers are hinting at a Sault Ste. Marie comeback, with talk of constructing a "significant" residential/commercial complex on the former Northern Breweries site, currently a parking lot between the new Downtown Plaza and Montana's BBQ & Bar.

And as SooToday reported earlier this month, work has officially begun on a new 108-unit apartment complex behind the Algonquin Hotel.

Last week, Mayor Matthew Shoemaker marked his first year in office with the release of his latest progress report, part of a campaign pledge to keep Sault residents up to speed on how his election promises are panning out.

He also stopped by our SooToday studio for an in-depth discussion on some of the big issues facing our city. During the conversation, we asked him about the latest potential development projects, including the Station Mall condos and the Veldmans' newest pitch.

“I want to see the plans progress, for sure," Shoemaker said. "Talking about the concept of something versus the actual implementation of something is nice, but I want to get to the implementation stage before we cork too many champagne bottles.”

You can watch our full interview with the mayor HERE. Be sure to also cast a vote on how you would grade Shoemaker's first year in office.
