VIDEO: Sault shooting rampage ‘worst possible scenario you can imagine’

'If some of the investigation from this tragedy determines that there is a better way to do gun control in Canada, I think that it’s a discussion worth having': Mayor Shoemaker

Earlier this week, Sault Police released new details about the ongoing investigation into the recent mass shooting that killed four people in our community, including three innocent children.

Police disclosed that the gunman did not have a licence to possess or acquire firearms, and that detectives are still investigating how he obtained the two weapons seized at one of the crime scenes.

Sault Police also identified the two firearms they found: one is an SKS rifle and the other is a .38 calibre revolver.

“Detectives continue to investigate how the firearms were acquired,” said a news release issued by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “Photos of the firearms are not being released to not further victimize those involved in the incident.”

During a recent interview in our SooToday studio, Mayor Matthew Shoemaker talked about the devastating shooting rampage, and how he pressed Justin Trudeau on the epidemic of intimate partner violence when the prime minister visited the Sault last month.

“The hope is that the province and the federal government, frankly, will come up with a roadmap for tackling this challenge," Shoemaker said.

The mayor was also asked how important it is for the public to know how the shooter — who was well-known to police — managed to obtain firearms.

“If some of the investigation from this tragedy determines that there is a better way to do gun control in Canada, I think that it’s a discussion worth having because certainly I never want to see something like that happen in our community again," Shoemaker said.
