SooToday received the following statement and video from Sault College regarding their flag raising ceremony in commemoration of National Indigenous Peoples Day.
The College expressed sympathy and its support for Indigenous communities as they continue to uncover unmarked graves at former residential schools across the country.
The statement reads as follows:
Last week, Sault College commemorated National Indigenous Peoples Day with a flag raising ceremony. Each year we take the opportunity to celebrate this day and the outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples of Canada.
This year, with the recent news and discovery of those at the sites of former residential schools in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, our focus was to honour all those who have been lost and remember the survivors and the generations, both past and future, impacted by residential schools.
The entire Sault College community offers its sympathy, support and stands alongside all Indigenous communities today and every day, and re-commits to its role in teaching, listening, and reflecting on the history of residential schools and the rich and diverse cultures, voices, experiences and histories of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples of Canada. We honour. We remember. #everychildmatters
