VIDEO: Residential school survivor Mike Cachagee always spoke the truth

A fierce advocate for fellow survivors, Cachagee died on July 15 at age 83; outspoken until the end, he was a recent guest on our ‘Inside the Village’ podcast

An outspoken survivor of Canada’s residential school system passed away this week in Sault Ste. Marie, triggering an outpouring of respect and condolences.

Arnold Michael Frederick Cachagee was the first survivor of Shingwauk Residential School to ever graduate from Algoma University, which is housed in the same building as the former school.

He went on to be a fierce advocate for fellow survivors, adamant that the history of the residential school system must never be forgotten. He specifically fought against the destruction of records documenting the experiences of more than 38,000 survivors.

Cachagee died peacefully at Sault Area Hospital on July 15 at the age of 83. A celebration of life was held yesterday at the Garden River First Nation Community Hall.

On the eve of last year’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Cachagee took part in what would be his final media interview: a wide-ranging conversation with Village Media's Inside the Village podcast.

He described what life was really like inside residential schools, and why no amount of money could ever fully compensate the children who were stolen from their families. He also offered his opinion on the Pope’s recent apology to former students.

The interview can be seen in the video clip above. The full episode can be found HERE.
