Have you had to swerve to avoid potholes on your daily commute lately?

Amid milder than usual weather, a number of deep potholes have been making an appearance on city streets, and city staff point to this winter’s heavy snowfall as a likely culprit in the number of potholes around the community.

“This winter’s significant snowfall has contributed to the development of potholes, as water seeps into cracks, freezes, and expands, causing asphalt to break,” said Dan Perri, director of public works.

While the city patches potholes year round – using a cold mixture through from November to March, and recycled asphalt, a more permanent fix, through the summer – the city website said patching efforts typically ramp up in late winter and early spring.

The city patches potholes based on its road surveys/inspections, as well as reports from the public. To report a pothole to the city, residents can call (705) 759-5201 or email [email protected].

Notices of claim can also be filed with the city for vehicle damage from potholes on its website, though the city encourages residents to reduce speed, maintain optimum tire pressure, and avoid sudden braking when approaching potholes.
