The United Way of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District board of directors has a new executive director after it announced retirement of CEO Gary Vipond.

In a press release, the board of directors thanked Vipond for his service and wished him a long and happy retirement, and said they were looking forward to working toward their 5-year goals with Lori Huston, who will be the new executive director.

During Vipond's 21 years with the United Way, he lead the organization through a significant change from a fundraiser to a community impact organization.

He also helped establish the Harvest Algoma Food Resource Centre.

Lori Huston will step into the executive director role after 18 years with the organization.

She has worked as a coordinator in multiple areas and a manager in the United Way essential services division.
