The United Steelworkers Local 2724 is celebrating its 25th anniversary this weekend.

The union, which represents around 500 salaried Algoma Steelworkers in technical, support and front-line supervisor positions, was originally founded Oct. 17, 1995.

Local 2724 is giving $100,000 donations to 13 charitable organizations locally in order to mark its anniversary, including donations of $25,000 each to ARCH Hospice, Sault Area Hospital and the YMCA.

10 additional donations of $2,500 each went to 10 not-for-profit organizations, including Women in Crisis, Group Health Centre Trust Fund and St. Vincent Place.

Recording secretary Melissa McMaster tells SooToday that the nine-member executive for the union wanted to make a "big impact" in the community this year.

“We wanted to make an impact, considering the year everybody’s had with COVID and struggles throughout our community,” McMaster said.

The union executive passes a motion for $16,000 to be donated to local, not-for-profit organizations each year.
