United Steelworkers give to local charities feeding the hungry

This year, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is donating $247,250 to 124 food banks and community organizations across Canada

The United Steelworkers today presented the Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen and St. Vincent Place with cheques from the Steelworkers Humanity Fund, topping off a year of giving to a variety of charities by workers across the industry.  

This year, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is donating $247,250 to 124 food banks and community organizations across Canada, the union said in a news release.

Each year, the demand on food banks has been consistently rising, the union says.

It added that during the past year, United Steelworker locals from Sault Ste. Marie donated over $268,000 to 66 local charities and organizations.   

Local 2251 donated to charities including Algoma Autism, the breakfast program at ADSB and HSCDSB, ARCH, Fringe North International Theatre Festival, Pauline’s Place and more.

Local 2724 supported local charities including THRIVE Child Development Centre, The Twinkie Foundation, Sault Star Santa Fund, SAH, the Navy League and Children’s Aid Society.

The Local 8748 membership voted to support organizations including Women in Crisis, Christmas Cheer, Jump Start Sault Ste. Marie and Sault Ste. Marie Rendezvous.

Local 9548 made donations to groups that included Canadian Mental Health, Leo Gerard Chair in Collective Bargaining & Worker Representation, MADD Canada, and the Royal Canadian Legion.

Local 7129 donated to Harvest Algoma.

This fall, the Twinkie Foundation received a donation of $11,740 from the Steelworkers Charity Golf Tournament.
