UFC featherweight to speak to Sault students about bullying

Antonio Carvalho, a current fighter in the UFC's featherweight division, will be visiting Sault Ste. Marie on May 3 and 4 to speak to local students and conduct two separate martial arts seminars.

Carvalho, who was born in Sault Ste. Marie but raised in Portugal, often speaks at schools and other youth programs about the issue of bullying.

As a child, Carvalho was a victim of bullying and he speaks of the lasting impact that bullying can have on children.

He will also tell his unusual life story that begins in Sault Ste. Marie and takes him to Portugal, where he was signed as a professional soccer player, back to Canada where he discovered martial arts, to Japan where he became known as one of the best featherweight fighters in the world, and eventually to the UFC.  

Carvalho will speak to the students of White Pines C & V.S. on the afternoon of Friday, May 3.

Carvalho will also conduct two martial arts seminars while in Sault Ste. Marie.  

On Friday, May 3, Carvalho will teach an MMA seminar from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Steel City MMA (99 Industrial Court B), and on Saturday, May 4 he will teach a Jiu Jitsu seminar with emphasis on self defense techniques.  

Both seminars are open to the public.
