People are being encouraged to “turn the Sault blue” this month.

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.

The Alzheimer Society Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District is hoping the public will help raise awareness by leaving up blue or blue and white holiday lights, or consider using a blue bulb to light up their front entrance.

Businesses can also put up an awareness message on outdoor signs.

“Use your creativity and send us your pictures to share how you have ‘Turned Blue,’” the society said in a news release.

There will also be a flag raising this Friday at 4 p.m. at City Hall, along with an awareness event Saturday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m at the plaza.

The society says a diagnosis of dementia is not easy and they hope to connect people living with it and their care partners with support, knowledge, and a sense of community, so they don’t have to face the journey alone.

“At any point in your experience living with dementia or caring for a person with dementia, the Alzheimer Society is your first place to turn,” the society said.
