Three new wildland fires reported in Sault region

There are 12 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region, three are not under control

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) is reporting an uptick in fire activity with three new wildland fires confirmed by early evening on Sunday.

All of the new fires are in the Northeast Region. 

The fires reported today are:

  • Sault Ste. Marie 20 is a 0.6 hectare fire and is not under control. It is located approximately 4 kilometres west of Mount Lake.
  • Sault Ste. Marie 21 is a 0.1 hectare fire that is not under control. It is located 3.5 kilometers west of Davieaux Lake.
  • Sault Ste. Marie 22 is a 1 hectare fire located approximately 1 kilometer northeast of Bearhead lake. It is not under control.

As of the Sunday update, there are 12 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region; three are not under control, one is under control and eight are being observed.

The fire hazard ranges is low to moderate across the Northeast Region except for areas with a high hazard over Espanola, Thessalon, Wenebegon River Provincial Park and south of Gooderham, the AFFES said.

AFFES was reminding the public to use caution when performing outdoor burning. To dispose of yard waste and woody debris, people were encouraged you to use methods such as composting or the landfill.  

Fires are to be ignited no sooner than two hours before sunset and are to be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise. Always have tools/water adequate to contain the fire at the site, AFFES said.
