Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is preparing to welcome two new players to its retail scene.

The city has received plans from Kohl’s to bring a new store to the I-75 Business Spur, city planning and zoning administrator Kelly Freeman told SooToday.

Kohl’s is a retailer with stores across the U.S., and sells a wide range of items including appliances, furniture and clothing.

The Sault, Michigan Kohl’s store will be located in the Cascade Crossing shopping mall (the old Walmart plaza) near Buffalo Wild Wings and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft.

The store will occupy approximately 30,000 square feet.

The Kohl’s building permit is under review, but Freeman said he does not foresee any obstacles moving forward.

The timeline for the Kohl’s project is not known at this time.

Meanwhile, Freeman said plans for a Meijer store in Sault, Michigan are moving ahead.

“There’s been a vast change of scenery from even a month ago.”

The Meijer store, which will offer groceries and department store goods, will be built near I-75 and Three Mile Road, adjacent to West 14th Street.

A Meijer brand gas station and convenience store will also be built beside the main retail store.

The Carmike Varsity Cinema’s lease on the Meijer site runs out at the end of August, and that building will be demolished to make room for Meijer, Freeman said.

The Meijer development will be 205,000 square feet.

By comparison, the new Sault, Michigan Walmart is 185,000 square feet.

Meijer’s interest in Sault, Michigan dates back to November 2013, and the project was approved in 2014.

“This year there is a lot of roadwork necessary at West 14th Street and some work on Three Mile Road,” Freeman said.

“That process will take place the rest of this summer and into the winter, then I understand their plans are to start construction on the building in the spring of 2016, and opening in spring of 2017.”

“There’s an awful lot happening over here,” Freeman said enthusiastically.

“We didn’t coach or reach out to either company in terms of incentives, it was purely a business decision for them to look into this market.”

“Certainly a lot of interest has been generated by the presence of the Canadian shopper in the retail market,” Freeman said.
