A local Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord teacher has been named the Elementary School Educator of the Year for the Sault Ste. Marie region.

Ms. Geneviève Freeland teaches Grade 5 and 6 at École publique Écho-des-Rapides and was recently recognized by Grocer 4 Good – which acknowledges the work of exceptional educators – at the third annual "Come As You Are" Gala.

In a news release, the Grand Nord school board says Ms. Freeland has a unique ability to identify the individual needs of her students, addressing them in a personal and proactive manner.

“In addition to structuring well-planned days, she dedicates herself to identifying areas needing additional support, personally committing to ensure her students' success,” the school board stated.

“She uses real-life situations to teach, offering challenges that prepare her students for adulthood while guiding them through solving real-world problems.”

Freeland transforms her students’ interests into practical lessons, developing strong and confident francophone students, the school board added.
