Algoma University has once again made the list in Maclean's ranking of top universities in Canada — but dropped one spot from last year.

In this year's ranking of 'Canada’s Best Primarily Undergraduate Universities,' Algoma U is the last of 20 universities recognized by the magazine.

Last year, Algoma U broke the Top 20 list for the first time ever with a ranking of 19.

"This recognition highlights our commitment to fostering a supportive environment for current and future Thunderbirds," said Craig Fowler, the university's vice president of growth, international and external relations, in an email on Tuesday. "Our continued efforts to expand academic programs and enhance student services reflect our focus on delivering a unique, community-oriented experience for students."

Algoma U is given the highest mark in the ranking for its operating budget. It ranks 12th in the scholarships and bursaries category and 13th in total research dollars.

"Notably, we are recognized for offering leading scholarship opportunities among public universities," said Fowler.

Although Algoma brought up the rear in this year's rankings, Fowler said recent investments will support the university's growth and help it advance in future rankings.

"These include the construction of a new 500-plus-bed student residence at our Brampton campus, the introduction of the first Containment Level 2 (CL2) science lab in Sault Ste. Marie, and new space renovations for Visual Arts and Psychology programs," said Fowler. "Between 2023 and 2025, Algoma University is welcoming 51 new faculty members and 95 new staff members, encouraging us to continue our journey to lead change for generations to come – creating a lasting impact through teaching and learning, research, and leading community-building projects."
