Okay, we admit it.
This time of year we'd use almost any pretext to post another picture of Anna Kournikova.
But we do want you to know that Parkland Public School at 54 Amber Street has just been announced as one of 200 schools across Canada receiving special free tennis kits to introduce tennis to their students.
Later this month, Parkland Principal JoAnn McKenzie will receive racquets, tennis balls and other equipment for a class of up to 32 students to be taught the sport during their regularly scheduled physical education classes.
The "Tennis in a Can" kit also includes a Tennis Canada instructor's manual and a DVD to help teachers deliver the program.
The cost of the program is subsidized by Tennis Canada, its provincial tennis associations, and the For the Love of Kids Foundation with world-renowned tennis coach Nick Bollettieri. "The program recognizes that schools are under severe budget constraints and that providing new equipment and resources for physical education programs can be difficult," says Tennis Canada in a written statement.
"The pilot program will serve to provide a turn-key curriculum-based tennis program to schools that have access to at least two tennis courts."
Tennis instruction at Parkland Public School will begin in the spring.
