We have a winner! Copper Country Coffee Roasters took home first place at a business pitch competition hosted by the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation last night.

Company owner Lars Moffatt won a $19,000-valued grand prize, which includes legal services from Laidlaw Paciocco Dumanski Spadafora and Johnson LLP, a Sootoday advertisement package, Starter Company Plus grant of $5,000, Broadband for E-Business and Marketing (BEAM) grant of $5,000, $1,000 cash courtesy of TD Canada Trust, and $500 cash courtesy of KPMG.

The Pitch Off happened at Bridges to Better Business, an annual learning and networking forum facilitated by the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation.

This year’s event, which took place at Delta Hotels by Marriott Sault Ste. Marie Waterfront, attracted more than 160 entrepreneurs and executives from around the region.

The Pitch Off began last month with 20 entrepreneurs submitting their business proposals. The field was narrowed down to a pair of finalists, who presented their pitches to the audience and panel of judges at Bridges to Better Business.

Jarrett Longo, owner of MarLo Construction and Millwork, took home the second-place prize, which is valued at $7,000. This package includes accounting and tax services from BDO Canada, legal services from Wishart Law Firm, a Starter Company Plus grant of $2,500, and $1,000 cash courtesy of Community First.

“I congratulate Copper Country Coffee Roasters and MarLo Construction and Millwork for their great proposals,” said Harleen Puaar, economic development officer for the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation. “I also thank the prize sponsors, event supporters and attendees for making this year’s Pitch Off and Bridges to Better Business a resounding success.”

Along with the Pitch Off prize sponsors and host venue, Bridges to Better Business 2018 would not be possible without the support of the Millworks - Centre for Entrepreneurship, Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), YouLaunch division of the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, Community Development Corporation of Sault Ste. Marie and Area, Province of Ontario, and Canada Business Ontario.
