You'll remember back in early December we were telling you how Gene Chiarello (shown) had returned to the Sault after starting chemotherapy for brain cancer.
How his team, the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds, had raised $19,208 for him through a benefit game against Université de Moncton.
We want you to know that Gene's still on the minds of a lot of people out East.
His name has been popping up regularly over the holiday season in the Fredericton Daily Gleaner.
In today's edition, for example, sportswriter Bill Hunt published two moving E-mails from the Sault athlete.
"My recent battle has desensitized me and made me somewhat emotionless; few things make me laugh and absolutely nothing makes me cry," Chiarello writes.
Nothing, he says, except for the support he and his family are receiving from teammates and a community 1700 kilometres away from the Sault.
In the other E-mail, Chiarello talks about an encouraging phone call he got from Curtis Joseph.
You'll want to read Chiarello's uplifting words for yourself. Just click here.
And we also think you'll want to read a Gleaner column from earlier this week on the "Relevance of Sport." Chiarello isn't mentioned in that piece until the final paragraphs, so you'll have to soldier through to the end to catch the Sault angle. Click here.
