SAULT STE. MARIE FIRE SERVICES

************************* Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to a fire on Friday, August 29, 2008.

As a result, three adults and one infant were treated and released from Sault Area Hospital for smoke inhalation.

A $235 ticket was issued to the tenant for removing the battery from the smoke alarm.

"This incident could have had a much more tragic ending," stated Chief Lynn McCoy. "People must take responsibility for their own fire safety and the safety of individuals under their care." Fire Services would like to remind the public that tampering with smoke alarms, or not having working alarms on all storeys of the home, is in violation of the Ontario Fire Code and is liable to a fine of up to $50,000 and one year in jail or both.
