For the first time in three years, residents marched along Wellington Street East and Queen Street on Tuesday as part of the annual Take Back the Night March.
The march encourages survivors of violence, as well as their families and supporters, to come together and celebrate the strength of the victims while working towards putting an end to violence against women, children, and men.
Kaitlynn Swinn, coordinator for the Phoenix Rising Women’s Centre & Non-Profit Homes Centre, is excited to bring the walk back to the community after COVID made it impossible to do so.
“There’s no time better than now for a walk like this,” she says. “We want to remind people that violence is a forefront issue and that we really need to be doing something about it.”
The Phoenix Rising Women’s Centre collaborates with several community partners to help make the event possible.
Following the march, participants gathered at the Sault Fire Services station at the corner of Tancred Street and Bay Street for a candlelight ceremony and refreshments.
