Sault Ste. Marie’s Take Back the Night march goes Thursday.

The march is part of an annual international event protesting the violence that occurs against women worldwide.

Sault Ste. Marie has been participating since the mid-1980s.

“The march encourages all people, including victims, to move forward, providing hope and promise for survival,” said Phoenix Rising Women's Centre in a news release.

“This is an occasion for women to celebrate their strengths and courage, to channel their energy, commit to continue to work towards change and collectively shatter the silence of violence.”

It will start at 6:30 p.m., leaving from Phoenix Rising Women's Centre at 596 Wellington Street East. The route will end at 89 Foster Drive where there will be a candlelight ceremony and guest speaker.
