Annual Ghost Walk at Fort St. Joseph offers glimpse into the past, rum-tasting

For over twenty years, Parks Canada has been hosting an evening Ghost Walk on the grounds of Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site, where spirits from the past guide visitors by candlelight around the ruins of Fort St. Joseph.

This year’s event takes place Sat. Aug. 18, from 4:30 p.m. Saturday to 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to the City of Sault Ste. Marie website 36 spaces are still available for the event, with standard and internet registration ending tomorrow, Tues. Aug. 14.

Ghostly re-enactors show visitors what life was like 200 years ago for British soldiers, fur traders, First Nations and Métis Peoples.

The event is held every August, but this year, for the first time ever, the event will offer a second type of spirit.

Participants may purchase an adults-only event package which includes a gourmet dinner at the Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site, transportation to and from the Ghost Walk at Fort St. Joseph, admission to the event, and a special rum tasting program offered by military interpreters from Signal Hill National Historic Site in Newfoundland.

The $100 standard charge includes the Newfoundland Interpreters presentation, rum tasting, a traditional dinner, demonstrations and the bus trip to Fort St. Joseph for the annual Ghost Walk, including a full eight hours of entertainment.

For more information, contact the Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site at 705 759-5443.
