NEWS RELEASE
SUSAN MYERS CITY COUNCILLOR WARD TWO
***************************** Speculation ends - Myers is not running for mayor
SAULT STE. MARIE - Contacted today by Sault Star veteran reporter Elaine Della Mattia, Ward Two Councillor Susan Myers confirms she will not be undertaking a run for the office of mayor in the upcoming 2010 municipal election.
“When Elaine contacted me a few weeks back I promised her I would answer her question in January. After careful and prayerful consideration I must say I want to continue serving the constituents in Ward Two at this time and plan to re-apply for that job; I have no plans to run for mayor.”
Myers says she has found as a member of many boards and committee, an opportunity to roll up her sleeves and work at important community initiatives and priorities.
These include: Sault Area Hospital, critical work as the new hospital comes on board in March 2011; Algoma Public Health, excellence in public health protection as seen during the recent H1N1 incident; Economic Development Corporation, chaired the review committee; Physician Recruitment and Retention Board and sub-committee, great results now coming from years of investment and hard work of staff; conferences and special events, as chair providing Council with a process by which to approve funding support; Conservation Authority vice-chair, work that protects and oversees our natural assets; DSSAB (District Social Services Admin Board), managing the important social needs of our area; Historic Sites Board, work that strengthens and soon will expand our Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site.
Looking forward, Myers plans to make the City’s 100th Anniversary scheduled for 2012, a priority project.
The year long celebration should be a great economic opportunity for tourism and local business.
In fact she sees it as a great recruitment tool to lure back ex pats to possibly re-invest in their hometown.
“I love Sault Ste. Marie. After 14 years as the tourism and marketing manager where it was my job to promote this city, that is still what excites me the most. I want the residents of Ward Two to know I will respond to their needs, listen to their ideas and invite their input in all initiatives we undertake on their behalf.”
Myers currently lives in Ward Three having inherited her parents home however she is moving into Ward Two next month and delighted to be doing so.
“Ward Two is my heart home; I was born on Upton Road, grew up on Findlay Street and when I first moved back to the Sault, I had an apt on Church Street. I am very excited to be 'moving home' again!”
