Celeste Schoahs, a Grade 12 student at Superior Heights Secondary School was named the recipient of the 2022 Zonta Club of Sault Ste. Marie Area Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award.
The goal of the YWPA Award program is to encourage young women to participate in public affairs by recognizing a young woman’s commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to the empowerment of women.
Applicants are asked to reflect on their voluntary commitment to their school and their community and the problems limiting the empowerment of women in their own country and worldwide. The Zonta International YWPA Award program looks to the young women of today for the leaders of tomorrow.
Ms. Schoahs is a role model for young women and girls as well as a strong leader, not only in her school but also in the community as she volunteers for Clean North, the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club. She is the youth ambassador for the Water Wise Association, supporting a community-wide water awareness presentation. Celeste is planning to attend the University of Guelph, studying Environmental Science. At Superior Heights, Celeste shows strong leadership skills, whether in the Envirothon Club, as a member of the Algoma District School Board Speakers’ Bureau, the Link Crew or a Relay for Life Student Leader.
