Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) has reported eight new cases of COVID-19 in the jurisdiction for Aug. 24.

The health unit is also reporting there are now 40 active cases being monitored.

This is the highest active case count of all the health units in Northern Ontario.

Locally, Algoma is reporting 11 active cases, Porcupine Health Unit is reporting six, Thunder Bay District Health Unit is reporting six cases, Northwestern Heath is reporting four, Nipissing Parry Sound is reporting four and the Timiskaming Health Unit is reporting zero.

As for the possible location of new cases, PHSD said seven cases were reported to have occurred in Greater Sudbury, along with one new case in the Manitoulin district.

With respect to the possible causes of recent cases, PHSD reported there were three cases with no known epidemiological link and five new cases under investigation.

PHSD also reported general demographics each day about the people who are becoming infected.

Epidemiological data showed that the majority of local cases are persons in the 20 to 39 age category with 745 total cases (an increase of two).

The next highest group number was 563 cases for the 40 to 59 age group (an increase of two).

The next highest number was 545 cases for the 19 and under age group (no increase).

Seniors in the 60 to 79 age group amounted to 305 cases total (no increase).

People aged 80 and over are currently the lowest category with 96 cases (no increase).

The numbers above might not correspond to other numbers being reported because the health unit does not report fresh numbers daily, as they happen. Some of the numbers are delayed.

With respect to COVID-19 testing, 278,467 tests have been performed in the PHSD region; an increase of 243 since the last testing results. With respect to new vaccinations, the health unit reported there are 242,950 total accumulated vaccines in local jurisdiction. This also includes 110,682 of those who are fully vaccinated.

The health unit webpage has also reported there is a current active COVID-19 outbreak on Manitoulin Island at the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory.

PHSD also listed several recent exposure risks. The details can be found on the daily COVID summary page

Also, at Sudbury's Health Sciences North, as of Aug. 24, there were three patients with confirmed COVID-19 at the hospital, said the HSN website. All three patients are in the Intensive Care Unit. In addition to this there were four admitted patients "being tested" for COVID-19. HSN said none of those four patients being tested has been admitted to the ICU at this time. No new numbers were reported for August 23 at press time Monday.
