Stolen plates lead police to home invasion suspect

Police are still looking for a second suspect, a teenaged girl

On Apr. 3, 2017 officers with the Investigations Services Division and Patrol Services Division of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 2 individuals as a result of a traffic stop.

Just after 2 p.m. officers observed a vehicle driving on Wellington Street East at Gore Street. The vehicle was displaying a licence plate that had been reported stolen.

The vehicle was stopped and it was soon found that an occupant in the vehicle was alleged to have been involved in a home invasion moments earlier.

It is alleged that a passenger in the vehicle, 23-year-old Joseph Boyer of Wellington Street East had attended the residence of a person known to him in the 100 block of Albert Street East while in the company of a 16-year-old female. The two are alleged to have kicked in the door of the residence before going inside.

Once inside, it is alleged that Mr. Boyer held a knife to the throat of a resident while the female stole several items including money and narcotics from the residence.

Both accused persons fled the area. Mr. Boyer was located by police during the traffic stop and placed in custody. A small amount of narcotics were found in his possession after his arrest. The female suspect has not been apprehended at this time.

Mr. Boyer has been charged with;

  • One count of robbery
  • One count of break and enter
  • One count of assault with a weapon
  • One count of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public
  • 2 counts of breach of recognizance
  • One count of possession of stolen property, and;
  • One count of possession of a controlled substance

The driver of the vehicle, 22-year-old Michael Hogan of Albert Street East was also placed in custody. Upon his arrest a small amount of narcotics were found in his possession.

He has been charged with;

  • One count of possession of stolen property
  • 3 counts of breach of recognizance, and;
  • One count of possession of a controlled substance

Both Mr. Boyer and Mr. Hogan will appear in bail court today.
