A donation from the United Steelworkers (USW) Local 2724 is intended to aid with security measures at the emergency department at Sault Area Hospital.
The aim of the donation — $56,500 — is to provide a safer environment for patients and staff at the facility.
"At USW Local 2724, we're more than a workforce – we're a family woven into the fabric of Sault Ste. Marie," said Rebecca McCracken, president of USW Local 2724. "Our recent profit sharing payout allowed us to give back to the community that has supported us for years."
"By contributing to the installation of new security doors at the Sault Area Hospital Emergency Department, we are ensuring that everyone who needs emergency care can be treated in a safe and compassionate environment.”
Sharon Abrams, patient care manager for the emergency department, spoke on the significance of the contribution from the union that represents salaried workers at Algoma Steel.
"In the wake of the pandemic, the heightened complexity of acute mental health and addictions care underscores the vital need for a secure healing environment. Installing new security doors stands as a crucial step towards ensuring the safety of vulnerable patients, dedicated staff, and visitors. This commitment to enhanced safety reflects our unwavering dedication to fostering a space of healing and support," Abrams said.
Executive director of the Sault Area Hospital Foundation, Teresa Martone, spoke on the continued support from USW Local 2724.
"The impact of their contributions touches the lives of countless patients. From bolstering our laboratory and medical imaging department to now enhancing security for our emergency department, USW Local 2724 consistently shows up for our community in countless ways," Martone said. "Once again, they keep showing us that Steelworkers do make great neighbours."
