Spitfires coach charged with aggravated assault

The following statement was issued this morning by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

The Robert Jones referred to is a former Soo Greyhound now serving as head coach of Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League.

The Sault Star is reporting that the victim in the alleged assault is Steven Rimmer, 19, of Sault Ste. Marie, whose jaw was broken.

Jones surrendered to police before Friday's Soo Greyhounds home game against his team.

The Spitfires have maintained that Jones was a victim, not a perpetrator in the Dock's incident.

************************* Arrest made in February 26 assault incident at Dock’s Riverfront Grill

Investigation services with the Sault Ste. Marie Police have concluded their investigation into a reported assault that occurred in the parking lot of Dock’s Riverfront Grill on the 26th of February between 1:45 a.m. and 2:30 a.m.

As a result of that investigation, Robert Jones, age 41, of Tecumseh Ontario, was arrested on the 18th of March at 10:55 a.m. at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, 580 Second Line East.

He has been charged with one count of aggravated assault as a result of injuries sustained by the male victim.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Sault Ste. Marie on the 4th of April.
