The Soo Y Dolphins swim team delivered standout performances at the Harbor Springs Winterblast Invitational on Jan. 18, marking their largest turnout since the pandemic, with approximately 270 swimmers from various teams.
The Dolphins’ results highlighted both individual and relay team achievements, a news release said.
Competing as the only Canadian team in the Michigan Team Swim League, they are honoured with the playing of the Canadian national anthem at competitions — a moment that resonates deeply with the athletes, who proudly represent Sault Ste. Marie and Canada in Michigan.
This year’s Winterblast Invitational was a testament to the Dolphins’ resilience and dedication. Several team members earned notable finishes:
- Boys 11/12 200-yard medley relay: 2nd place — Aryo Barzan, Alexander Mudge, Jacob Vanmarrum, Karter Xu
- Girls 13/14 200-yard medley relay: 3rd place — Chloe Fender, Victoria Gardner, Kensington Knight, Mackenna O’Leary
- Boys 11/12 200-yard free relay: 4th place — Jacob Vanmarrum, Tyson Vanmarrum, Karter Xu, Cameron Yasenovskiy
- Boys 9/10 50-yard fly: 1st place — Aryo Barzan
- Boys 13/14 100-yard back: 2nd place — Evan Juby
- Boys 13/14 50-yard freestyle: 4th place — Evan Juby
- Boys 13/14 100-yard freestyle: 4th place — Evan Juby
- Girls 13/14 100-yard freestyle: 4th place — Mackenna O’Leary
- Boys 11/12 50-yard breaststroke relay: 3rd place — Karter Xu
The Dolphins have been a fixture in the Sault Ste. Marie community for over 60 years, consistently developing athletes who go on to excel at the university level and beyond. Their long-standing tradition of success continues to inspire the current generation of swimmers, who are determined to uphold the team’s legacy.
