Precautionary evacuation at Northern Community Centre Sault Ste. Marie, ON (2024 11 15) –
The Northern Community Centre was evacuated earlier this evening when the smell of gas was detected in the building, said a news release from the city.
At about 5 p.m. staff found a burner on the stove in the concession area was left on, causing the pilot light to go out and allowing natural gas to escape. There was no danger to the public, but fire services were contacted. As a futher precaution the facility was evacuated and bookings scheduled for 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. cancelled.
The building is safe again for use.
