Small wildfire along Lake Superior confirmed today, already out

There were two new wildland fires in our region confirmed by early Sunday evening, with one of them just north of the Sault. However that fire is already out, fire officials report.

Sault Ste. Marie 4 (SAU004) was along Lake Superior and Highway 17, about 19 km northwest of Batchawana Bay.

It was a 0.1 hectare fire confirmed and called out on June 2.

There were four other active wildland fires in the Northeast Fire Region, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's forest firefighting division.

• North Bay 5 (NOR005) remains under control. This 106 hectare wildland fire is about 3 km southeast of Cobalt.
• Cochrane 9 (COC009) is a 30-hectare fire that is not yet under control. It's about 3 km east of Parson Lake and 8 km west of the Quebec border.
• Cochrane 8 (COC008) is a 35-hectare fire that is being observed. The fire is about 57.5 km northwest of Moosonee.
• Cochrane 6 (COC006) was remapped and is 13 hectares and is being held. The fire is 20 km northwest of Fort Severn off the coast of Hudson Bay. One Ontario FireRanger crew and a Coastal Ranger are assigned to this fire.

In its latest report, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services said the fire hazard varies from moderate to high across the Northeast Fire Region and is low from the Greater Sudbury area to the eastern half of Manitoulin Island.
