A small wildfire was confirmed yesterday just north of the Sault.

Dubbed Sault Ste. Marie 16, it's a 0.1 hectare fire that was not under control as of late Thursday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's firefighting division.

The fire was on the north end of Tay Lake, a small inland lake about 30 km northeast of Batchawana Bay.

At the time of Thursday's update, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services Northeast Fire Region said there were 15 active wildland fires in the region.

One was not under control, while five were under control and nine were being observed.

AFFES said the fire hazard is low to moderate across the northeast.

There is an area showing a high hazard from Caramat to Hornepayne and north up to the Albany River.
