Sault Ste. Marie Member of Parliament will pay tribute in the House of Commons, to former Saultite, the Governor General, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston.

“David was raised in Sault Ste. Marie where he began his impressive hockey career and even played with future hockey hall of famers Phil and Tony Esposito.  David married his high school sweetheart, Her Excellency Sharon Johnston, with whom he has five daughters.

“David has been a Canadian academic, author, statesman and the 28th Governor General since Canadian Confederation. David's motto, ‘to envisage a better world,’ remained strong throughout his mandate. David believed in the abilities of all Canadians to imagine and create a smarter, more caring nation and contribute to a fairer, more just world.”

MP Sheehan wishes David and Sharon a happy retirement from public life, on behalf of all Canadians and Sault residents. 

MP Sheehan recalls fondly David’s attendance at Sault Ste. Marie’s Celebrate 100! festivities, in recognition of Sault Ste. Marie’s 100th Anniversary as a city. MP Sheehan had co-chaired with Sault City Councillor Susan Myers, the committee that organized and provided leadership for those events.
