On Saturday, Terry Sheehan, member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, announced investments of almost $24 million toward the City of Sault Ste. Marie for local infrastructure projects.
The majority of the funding, up to $22.9 million, comes from Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities Canada towards upgrades for the West End Wastewater Treatment Plant. A reliable wastewater treatment plant is a critical piece of infrastructure required to support more homes.
The City is undertaking important upgrades to the city’s WEWWTP to support planned growth in the west catchment area, reduce maintenance demands and improve operational efficiencies. The improvements have been identified as a high priority in the city’s asset management plan. This project ensures that the plant will continue to meet the needs of Sault Ste. Marie's growing population and forecasted housing needs into the next decade.
A further grant of up to $1 million comes from the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program, which will go toward energy and accessibility retrofits at the John Rhodes Community Centre. The funding will assist the City to replace the existing roof to support solar panel installation, improve HVAC efficiency, and modernize the lighting system.
These changes aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs, aligning with Canada’s climate goals. Additionally, accessible bleachers will be installed in the hockey arena to create an inclusive environment for families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
This investment, delivered through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF), plays a crucial role in strengthening essential infrastructure and getting more homes built faster.
”For the first time in a generation, Sault Ste. Marie is growing," Sheehan said. "This is why the federal government is helping the City make much need improvements to infrastructure that will help us continue to build more housing and support our growing population."
“The City remains committed to ensuring housing in Sault Ste. Marie is attainable and affordable," Mayor Matthew Shoemaker added.
"The investment from the Government of Canada in the West End Treatment Plant is a vital step toward strengthening Sault Ste. Marie’s infrastructure, ensuring we have the necessary capacity to accommodate future growth and meet the evolving housing needs of our residents.”
