Local MP Terry Sheehan attended the annual convention of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) - the leading advocates for the nation's mining sector.

As Parliamentary Secretary for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario (FedNor), Sheehan met with Minister Patty Hajdu and with FedNor officials to discuss FedNor support for northern Ontario in response to Trump's tariffs.

FedNor played a key role in supporting Sault Ste. Marie and northern Ontario when Donald Trump imposed unfair tariffs on Canadian steel in 2018, and will continue to play an important part in supporting Northern Ontario's economy now.

The federal government has earlier announced plans to respond to US tariffs by matching them dollar-for-dollar on a variety of American-made goods.

"FedNor support will be one part of Canada's multilayered response to the unjustified Trump tariffs," said Sheehan.

"We will work alongside all levels of government, workers, and industry in a unified response. In this time, I encourage everyone to buy Canadian as government, businesses, workers, and community leaders across the country are united in this effort. We will retaliate again with counter-tariffs and use other ways to defend Canada.

"Our government will work hard to ensure that Canadians are supported through this time, and as chair of the All-Party Steel Caucus, member of the Trade Committee, and as the representative of a proud steel town, I will work to ensure these tariffs are lifted."
