Sault Ste. Marie is another year older as the city celebrates its 111th birthday today.

Twenty-five years after being incorporated as a town, the Sault was officially incorporated as a city on Tuesday, April 16, 1912.

Taking to social media to recognize the occasion, Mayor Matthew Shoemaker is looking forward to the years that lie ahead.

"Our community has been and continues to be the greatest place to live, work and raise a family," his post reads. "May our next 111+ years continue to offer that same greatness!"

A history-defining moment that ultimately paved the way to the many political and social customs Saultites practise and appreciate today; there was also no shortage of significant events that had been taking place around the world at that time.

News of the Titanic's ill-fated sinking showed up in newspapers across the globe on April 16, 1912 - one day after a worst-case collision with an iceberg claimed around 1,500 lives and left the 'unsinkable' luxury liner in shambles at the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Three days before that, the Royal Flying Corps formed on April 13, 1912, which would later become the Royal Air Force six years later.

And it was a historic week for Major League Baseball as Tiger Stadium in Detroit and Fenway Park in Boston opened on April 20, 1912. Both home teams would win their openers by one run.
