Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services will conduct a free fire safety and emergency preparedness information session on Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The session will take place at the Sault Community Career Centre at 477 Queen Street East, Suite 101.
The hour-long session will provide newcomers with essential knowledge about fire safety practices in the Sault.
Aaron Gravelle, public education officer with Sault Fire Services, emphasized the importance of the session.
“In our experience, it is a fairly new concept to a lot of individuals in these sessions,” he said.
“In the past, many have found it beneficial to aid in the understanding of fire safety as well as the purpose of these safety devices and procedures.”
The session will cover a range of topics, including the importance of smoke alarms and how to test them.
It will also include how to protect yourself from carbon monoxide poisoning with carbon monoxide alarms, when and how to use fire extinguishers and how to plan and practice a safe exit with a home escape plan.
They will address what to do when you hear fire drills and alarms and basic steps to stay ready for an emergency.
Gravelle outlined some of the specific safety tips that he will teach throughout the lesson.
“We will be discussing how to test smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, calling 911 and safe cooking,” he said.
Sault Fire Services regularly conducts similar sessions for various community partners.
“We have done multiple sessions like this in the past few years for other groups at the Career Centre as well as other local agencies,” Gravelle said.
“Generally, we do these as stand-alone sessions, mainly to not overwhelm the participants with too much information in a short period of time.”
Participants will also receive fire safety pamphlets containing information related to the session topics.
There will possibly be a second session involving other fire safety topics.
