Sault College’s men’s soccer head co-coaches, Drew Johnson and Brandon Syms, were recognized for their outstanding efforts during the 2021-22 year by being named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Coach of the Year for the Central Division.
The pair showcased their expertise, passion and mentorship throughout the season strengthening both the indoor and outdoor men’s soccer teams. Under their leadership, the men’s outdoor team continued to grow and improve, while the indoor soccer team made Sault College history by advancing to the Provincial Championships for the first time.
"The coaching staff is extremely proud of the 2021-22 varsity soccer program and its accomplishments. Jumping back into the fall season after essentially a two-year hiatus wasn't the best of situations, but our team made it almost seamless,” said Drew Johnson. “I wish this award could be handed out to the team in its entirety since they were the ones putting in the work day-in and day-out. I believe this season was a big steppingstone for the program realizing its potential as well as gaining leverage with recruitment going forward. The coaching staff hopes to build off the past season's performances and strive for bigger, better things in the coming seasons,” he added.
“Having to take over this team halfway through the 2019 season, Drew and I put in the hard work in the off-season to prepare and recruit, which paid off this season. We couldn't be happier with the team and how they adapted to the style of play that was necessary to compete at this level. We really enjoy coaching this group and seeing their progress from start to finish is extremely rewarding," said Brandon Syms.
“We are extremely proud to see our men’s soccer coaches win the OCAA Coach of the Year award. Both Drew Johnson and Brandon Syms have worked extremely hard for the results that they achieved on the field this season. To be recognized by the OCAA in this way speaks to the commitment dedication of these two young coaches,” added Paul Orazietti, Manager, Athletics.
Congratulations to Drew and Brandon! The College has set its sights high for the upcoming soccer season.
