Sault air cadets take flight in Twin Otter aircraft

The Air Cadet Program is open to youth aged 12 to 18

Local air cadets recently had a chance to take flight.

Twenty-five air cadets from 155 Borden Gray GC Squadron had the opportunity to fly in Twin Otter aircraft, thanks to 440 Transport Squadron RCAF.

They also learned how Twin Otters are used for airlift, utility, and liaison flights in support of the Canadian Armed Forces in the north, and met pilots and crew members, including navigators and flight engineers

“Going in the plane was interesting and the crew was very nice," said Leading Air Cadet Islam Mohamed-Sharfraz in a news release.

The 440 Transport Squadron’s commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Steve Thompson says he was inspired to become a pilot when he had a similar opportunity as a young air cadet.

Two of the pilots who flew the cadets – Maj Marlon Mongeon and Capt. Matt Wiebe – were also past air cadets.

The 155 Squadron Cadets also took familiarization flights this past October.

The Air Cadet Program is open to youth aged 12 to 18 and aims to develop transferable skills that last a lifetime while having fun and making long lasting friendships.

There is no cost to join or participate in regular or optional training.
