RIDE check ends in impaired, open liquor charge

On January 1, 2016 at 10:45 p.m. members of the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Anishinabek Police Service were conducting joint RIDE checks on Highway 17, Highway 17B and Trunk Road intersection.

The driver of a pickup truck travelling westbound from Highway 17 proceeded through the RIDE check. 

There was indication that the driver had consumed alcohol.

As a result of further police investigation, Gregory BERG, 53 years, of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

  • One count of Care or Control of a Motor Vehicle with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.

  • One count of Driving a Motor vehicle with open container of liquor contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor License Act. 

The accused was released on a Promise to Appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on February 8, 2016.
