MOOSE FACTORY - On the one-year anniversary of a Moose Factory woman's death, the reward has been doubled for information that leads the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
Loni Chum was found dead on Nov. 7, 2023, on Jaban Street in Moose Factory, a remote island community in Northern Ontario that's across the river from Moosonee. Police believe the 21-year-old was hit by a pick-up truck around 3 a.m. that day.
James Bay OPP and Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) are leading the investigation into Chum's death.
A $100,000 reward is being offered for the person who provides police with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for Chum's death.
"We believe the community holds key information to solve this crime and hope the increased reward encourages anyone with details, no matter how small, to come forward. Loni's family and the community deserve to know the truth. In partnership with NAPS and support from Moose Cree First Nation leadership, we remain dedicated to solving this case and bringing resolution to Loni's loved ones," said Det.-Insp. Tom McVey, who's with the OPP criminal investigation branch, in a news release.

The $100,000 is double what was announced earlier this year.
The initial $50,000 is from the Ontario government, with Moose Cree First Nation council now matching that amount. In the news release, OPP says the chief and council's support reflects "the community's unwavering commitment to seeking justice for Loni."
