The PUC has issued a warning locally after reports of a phone scam making rounds locally.
As part of the scam, the caller demands payment of outstanding balances on electricity bills and threatens to cut off the power of the customer if a payment isn't made by credit card of other form of banking.
The PUC advises that customers who are behind on payments receive notifications over the phone or through the mail well before disconnection is a considered option. PUC does not ask for payments by wire transfer or credit card/other baking info over the phone.
Power cannot be cut off to a home during the winter. Companies like the PUC are banned by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) from disconnecting residential customers for non-payment between Nov, 15 and April 30.
Anyone who receives a similar call should contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Department at 1-888-495-8501.
If you have questions about your account status, you can contact the PUC's customer experience team at (705) 759-6522 or (705) 759-6555 for after hour emergencies.
