Canadians know that pollution isn’t free. A price on carbon pollution is an essential part of Canada’s plan to fight climate change and grow the economy. Pricing carbon pollution is the most efficient way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stimulate investments in clean innovation.
Under the federal carbon pricing system, all individuals in Ontario, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan will receive a Climate Action Incentive payment when they file their taxes this year. A family of four in Ontario will receive at least $307 in 2019.
The Government will provide a 10 per cent supplementary Climate Action Incentive payment for individuals who live in small and rural communities, in recognition of their increased energy needs and reduced access to energy-efficient transportation options.
MP Sheehan said “everyone who resides within the federal riding of Sault Ste. Marie is eligible for this extra 10 per cent supplementary. With the Climate Action Incentive payment, we are putting more money back into Canadians’ pockets, into families and communities, to help them reduce their emissions while making life more affordable. We can do both.”
In Ontario, 90 per cent of funds collected under the federal carbon pollution pricing system will be returned directly to families through the Climate Action Incentive payment, and 10 per cent of funds will support municipalities, schools, universities, hospitals, Indigenous groups and small businesses.
Residents of Ontario, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan can claim the Climate Action Incentive when they file their 2018 Income Tax and Benefit Returns.
Fill in Line 449 to receive the CAI payment. To receive the 10 per cent additional payment, check “Yes” on line 6014 of Schedule 14, when filing your taxes.
We know the environment and economy go hand in hand and Sault Ste. Marie has benefitted from several recent investment announcements. For example:
- Sheehan recently announced the Government of Canada’s investment of $11,800,000 for the Sault Ste. Marie Smart Grid Project, which will increase reliability, efficiency and resiliency of the local electric network.
- This historic upgrade means 140 new permanent jobs, integrating more renewable energy, improving reliability, lowering costs, and attracting new industries to our community.
- The Government of Canada’s Environmental Assessment Decision for Magino Gold Mine could lead to 550 jobs during construction and 350 during operations over the life of the project. The project proponent has committed to hiring locally, providing competitive wages and salaries, and working with regional and local educational institutions to coordinate training and maximize employment opportunities for area residents and Indigenous groups. The proponent also committed to maximizing local purchasing throughout all phases of the project.
- $20,000,000 in multi-year funding of investments for local transit projects and upgrades.
