POLL: Hey Sault Ste. Marie, let's vote on the traffic light experiment

A three-month experiment that saw traffic signals covered at three busy intersections is underway. What do you think?

A sign on Elgin Street warns of a new stop sign at Albert East

Alright, we have interviewed you in the street and read your many comments on the subject, so now let's put it to a vote:

What do you really think of the city's experiment that removed the traffic lights at Albert and Elgin, Albert and Dennis and Queen East and Church?

It seems the loudest voices so far have been those who think it has been a disaster. And it's hard to blame you for thinking that, given the photos of twisted metal that we have all seen from collisions (at Albert and Elgin specifically) during the last few weeks.

If there is an increased risk of people being injured, or worse, is it worth the risk, many have wondered?

Still, others have pointed out that it is unclear just yet (at least to those of us without access to the data) whether there have been statistically more collisions at those intersections since the experiment started.

Some say traffic flows more smoothly without the lights and the intersections are now clearly marked, suggesting that perhaps it is the inattentive drivers who need to adjust their habits (or be taken off the road?).

After all, the rules of the road are the rules of the road and drivers travelling to unfamiliar cities (and countries) are expected to understand how to engage with the local flow of traffic.
