Weather permitting, it looks like this year's Bon Soo Winter Carnival Polar Bear Swim event will still go ahead as planned at 1 p.m. Sunday February 7 at Bellevue Park.
Bon Soo officials were not immediately available for comment.
However, Randy Roy, Sault Search and Rescue president, speaking to SooToday Wednesday afternoon, said it appears the event is "good to go."
Sault Search and Rescue crews, who ensure everything is safe for those who want to take the icy plunge, found the original Polar Bear Swim site near the Bellevue Marina to be very slushy and wondered if the swim would have to be postponed to February 14.
Roy said Search and Rescue crews found another site near the marina where the ice measured 18 inches thick, about 100 feet away from the original site and closer to Topsail Island.
The Polar Bear Swim is an annual highlight of the Bon Soo Winter Carnival, which runs from February 4 to 15 this year.
Polar Bear Swim participants must be at least 16, and proof of age may be requested.
Participants register on site, and all who take part will receive a certificate of recognition for taking the icy plunge.
Those wanting more information may go to the Bon Soo website or call (705) 759-3000.
