Two people were hauled out of the Station Mall and detained by police following an incident Friday afternoon.
Members of Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and mall security approached a group of people seated at a table in the mall food court shortly after 12:30 p.m.
One man was overheard telling officers and security that he was “under no obligation” to share his private medical information.
“Just following orders like the f***ing SS, eh?” another person said to police.
“We’re human beings," said another. "Why are you treating us like second-class citizens?”
The majority of the group dispersed after the interaction with officers and security.
One person refused to leave, sitting on the floor of the food court.
“I’ll be sitting on the floor, not helping you arrest me at all,” he said to officers. “I will not be helping you.
“You will be carrying me out of here.”
Sault Ste. Marie Police Service removed a male and a female from the mall while a crowd of bystanders, gathered around the perimeter of the food court, cheered.
A screenshot from a social media group obtained by SooToday Friday shows what appears to be a group known as the 'Sault Ste. Marie Freedom Alliance' inviting people to the Station Mall food court to "dine in without sharing any medical information."
"We've done this a handful of times to encourage others with the power of non-compliance, and to remind everyone that we are human too," the post read. "Great opportunity to have open conversations and to stand within our sovereignty."
Sault Ste. Marie Police Service spokesperson Lincoln Louttit said officers responded as two people were asked to leave the property and repeatedly failed to comply.
They were arrested and charged with trespassing and causing a disturbance.
