Ontario reports 916 new COVID cases Monday

Today's update also includes 1,707 recoveries and 13 deaths

Public Health Ontario has reported 916 new COVID cases in its latest report (May 31).

Today's update also includes 1,707 new recoveries and 13 deaths. 

The deaths include three people between 40 and 59 years old, seven people between 60 and 79 years old, and three people over the age of 80. 

Since yesterday, the province has reported 43 new hospitalizations and 21 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The May 31 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 731 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, a decrease of 18 from yesterday's report.
  • There are 617 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19, an increase of three from yesterday's report and 382 COVID patients on ventilators, which down by 35 since yesterday's report.
  • The province reported 18,226 tests were processed.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 531,459 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 510,135 recoveries and 8,757 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,575.4 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 61.3 cases per 100,000 people, which is down by 31.3 per cent from last week (May 21 to May 27). 

Northern Ontario

A Northern Ontario health unit continues to have the highest weekly case rate in Ontario. 

The weekly case rate (from May 21 to May 27) for the Porcupine Health Unit, which covers the Timmins area, is 287.6 cases per 100,000 population. Peel Region’s rate is 122.5 cases per 100,000 population for the same time period. Toronto Public Health’s rate is 73.8 cases per 100,000 people.

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 393 cases, weekly rate of  8.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 392 cases. There are 18 known active cases. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 447 cases, weekly rate of 9.2 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 449 cases. There are 18 known active cases. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 1,357 cases, weekly rate of 287.2 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,366 cases. As of Friday, there were 307 known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 2,072 cases, weekly rate of 9.5 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,092 cases. There are 30 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 206 cases, weekly rate of 3.1cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 203 cases, There is one known active case. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 1,064 cases, weekly rate of 11.4 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,065 cases. There are 21 known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,234 cases, weekly rate of 19.3 cases per 100,000 people. There are 54 known active cases.
