Ontario reports 486 new COVID cases Tuesday

The latest update noted 541 recoveries and 18 deaths, but 16 deaths occurred more than two months ago and were not previously reported.

Public Health Ontario reported 639 new COVID cases today for Aug. 23. 

The latest update noted 541 recoveries and 18 deaths, but 16 of the deaths occurred more than two months ago but were not previously reported.

The Aug. 24 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • Of the new cases reported today, 279 were unvaccinated people, 41 were partially vaccinated, 114 were fully vaccinated, and 52 are listed as vaccination status unknown.
  • 5,053 active, lab-confirmed cases, down from 5,126 yesterday.
  • 295 COVID-positive people are currently hospitalized in Ontario.
  • Hospitalized cases (excluding ICU) include 116 unvaccinated people, 13 partially vaccinated, and 27 full vaccinated.
  • There are 125 COVID-positive patients in intensive care, plus another 31 patients who no longer test positive for COVID-19. 
  • 69 COVID patients are on ventilators and another 16 patients on ventilators no longer test positive for COVID-19.
  • ICU and ventilated cases include 67 unvaccinated people, 10 partially vaccinated, and seven fully vaccinated.
  • 9,793,814 Ontarians (about 66 per cent of total population) have been fully vaccinated and another 938,591 have a single dose of COVID vaccine.
  • The province reported 17,369 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a three per cent positivity rate. Provincial labs have processed 17 million tests to date.
  • Of the new cases reported today 129 are from Toronto, 82 are from Peel, 16 are from Simcoe-Muskoka, two are from Grey-Bruce, and 45 are from York Region.
  • Today's cases include 51 individuals under 12 years old, 70 youth between 12 and 19 years old, 229 people between 20 and 39 years old, 93 people between 40 and 59 years old, 33 people between 60 and 79 years old, and eight people over 79 years old.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 560,637 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 546,113 recoveries and 9,471 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,805.1 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate last week was 26.9 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 25.1 per cent from the week of Aug. 8.

Northern Ontario 

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 420 cases, weekly rate of 8.5 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 419 cases. There are 11 known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 663 cases, weekly rate of 0.8 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 664 cases. There are three known active cases.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 2,158 cases, weekly rate of 5.9 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,160 cases. There are seven known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 2,227 cases, weekly rate of 12.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,249 cases. There are 35 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 209 cases, weekly rate of 0 cases per 100,000 people. There are no known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 1,115 cases, weekly rate of 3.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,114 cases. There are five known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,354 cases, weekly rate of 3.2 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,355 cases. There are six known active cases.
