Ontario reports 35 new deaths, 297 COVID patients in ICUs

There are about 289 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID-related critical illness, according to the latest report by the province.

The latest COVID updates published by the province also report 35 new deaths, 2,427 new cases and approximately 1,003 COVID-positive patients in Ontario hospitals. New case counts are underestimated.

Hospitalizations have decreased since the beginning of the month. On Feb. 1, the province reported 3,091 COVID-positive patients and 568 of those patients in ICUs. 

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,096,357 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 1,065,561 recoveries and 12,386 deaths.

The Feb. 25 updates provided by the province's public health agency and the ministry of health also reported the following data:

Cases

  • 2,427 recoveries since yesterday's report
  • Among the new cases confirmed today are 287 unvaccinated people, 75 partially vaccinated people, and 1,892 fully vaccinated people. 173 cases were reported with vaccination status unknown. 
  • The seven-day average incidence rate for cases is 11.5 cases per 100,000 unvaccinated people, nine cases per 100,000 partially vaccinated people, and 11.7 cases per 100,000 fully vaccinated people. 

Hospitalizations

  • 1,003 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19. Of those, 48.5 per cent were admitted because of COVID-19 and 51.5 per cent were admitted for other reasons but test positive for COVID-19. 
  • Included in the hospitalized cases are 239 unvaccinated people, 29 partially vaccinated people, and 557 fully vaccinated people. 
  • There are approximately 297 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID-related illnesses, and 244 patients in the ICU currently testing positive for COVID-19.
  • There are 186 COVID patients on ventilators because of COVID-related critical illness.
  • Included in the ICU COVID patients are 69 unvaccinated, seven partially vaccinated, and 91 fully vaccinated people. 

Vaccination

  • About 85 per cent of the population over four years old in Ontario is fully vaccinated (about 11.9 million people)
  • More than 6.9 million people in Ontario have had three doses of a COVID vaccine.
  • 10 per cent of the eligible population (aged 5 and up) is unvaccinated

Testing

  • Provincial labs processed 21,550 tests yesterday resulting in a 9.8 per cent positivity rate. There are 5,749 tests still being processed.

Northern Ontario

In the north, there are 137 people with COVID-19 in hospital, down from 139 yesterday, according to provincial data. There are 21 people in ICU with the virus, down from 22 yesterday, and 15 people on ventilators, up from 14 yesterday. 

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data for cases and vaccination is:

  • Algoma Public Health: The health unit has reported 4,976 cases, 601 known active cases and 11 hospitalizations. Of the eligible population five years and older, 88 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 84 per cent have both doses. Of the population 18 years and older, 61 per cent have a booster.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: The health unit has reported 3,693 cases, 225 known active cases and five hospitalizations. Of the eligible population five years and older, 86 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 82 per cent have both doses. For the eligible population 18 years and older, 59 per cent have a booster.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: The health unit has reported 5,364 cases, 391 known active cases and seven hospitalizations. Of the eligible population five years and older, 88 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 82 per cent have both doses. For the eligible population 18 years and older, 53 per cent have a booster.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: The health unit has reported 11,075 cases, 460 known active cases and 50 hospitalizations. It is only updating its numbers Monday, Wednesday and Friday. As of Wednesday, there were 54 hospitalizations. Of the eligible population five years and older, 89 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 84 per cent have both doses. For the eligible population 18 years and older, 58 per cent have a booster.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: The health unit has reported 1,165 cases, 24 known active cases, and two hospitalizations, including one person in ICU. Of the eligible population five years and older, 86 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 82 per cent have both doses. For the eligible population 18 years and older, 58 per cent have a booster.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: The health unit has reported 4,806 cases and 409 known active cases. Current hospitalizations are not reported. Of the eligible population five years and older, 97 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 89 per cent have both doses. For the eligible population 18 years and older, 61 per cent have a booster.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: The health unit has reported 8,588 cases, 304 known active cases and 41 hospitalizations, including eight people in ICU. The health unit is only updating data Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Of the eligible population five years and older, 89 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 85 per cent have both doses. For the eligible population 18 years and older, 59 per cent have a booster.
