Ontario reports 1,022 new COVID cases Tuesday

Today's report also includes 1,388 new recoveries and 17 deaths

Public Health Ontario has reported 1,022 new cases of COVID-19 today (Feb. 9). 

Today's report includes 1,388 new recoveries, and 17 new deaths, seven were residents at long-term care homes.

The deaths reported today include one person between 20 and 39 years old, one person between 40 and 59 years old, four people between the ages of 60 and 79 years old, and 11 people over the age of 80.

The province has reported 62 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and 19 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The Feb. 9 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 13,948 active cases, which is down from 14,331 yesterday
  • 909 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 901 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 318 COVID patients in intensive care units (down from 335) and 223 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 226 yesterday).
  • The province reported 30,798 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 3.3 per cent positivity rate.
  • Another 33,273 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 10 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the 1,022 new cases reported today, 343 are from Toronto, 250 cases are from Peel, 128 are from York Region, and 23 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • There are 218 active outbreaks at long-term care homes, 117 at retirement homes and 66 at hospitals. 
  • Of the cases reported today there are 119 people under 19 years old, 382 people between 20 and 39 years old, 382 people between 40 and 59 years old, 301 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 38 people over the age of 80. 

Variant of concern

  • The province has reported 227 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7). 
  • The province has reported three cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
  • According to Public Health Ontario, there are delays between specimen collection and the testing required to confirm a variant of concern. As such, the reports can change and can differ from past case counts publicly reported.

Vaccine update for Feb. 9:

  • There were 12,462 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on Feb 8, up from 6,987 on Feb. 7.
  • As of 8 p.m. on Feb. 8, the province reported 398,633 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 115,529 people have been fully vaccinated, having received two doses of vaccine, which are to be given a few weeks apart.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 280,494 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 259,991 recoveries and 6,555 deaths, of which 3,747 were individuals living in long-term care homes.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,887 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 68.4 cases per 100,000 people from Jan. 30 to Feb. 5, which is a decrease of 20.8 per cent compared to Jan. 24 to Jan. 30 when the average weekly incidence rate was 86.4 cases per 100,000 people.

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 184 cases, rate of 160.8 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 186 cases. There are 30 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 12.2 cases per 100,000.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 209 cases, rate of 161.1 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 214 cases. There are 21 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 4.6 cases per 100,000.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 294 cases, rate of 352.3 per 100,000 people. There are 53 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 31.2 cases per 100,000.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 552 cases, rate of 277.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 540 cases. There are 41 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 14.1 cases per 100,000. There are two confirmed variant of concern (VOC) cases, both are the UK (B.1.1.7) strain.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 91 cases, rate of 278.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 91 cases. There is one known active case. The weekly incidence rate is 6.1 cases per 100,000.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 278 cases, rate of 317.1 per 100,000 people. There are 16 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 19.4 cases per 100,000.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 1,062 cases, rate of 708.2 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,070 cases. There are 103 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 63.4 cases per 100,000.

The Ontario government has declared a state of emergency, the second since the start of the pandemic, and a stay-at-home order is in effect until at least Feb. 9, 2021. There are additional measures in place for the shutdown, all of which can be found in this provincial breakdown.
